Crocodilians, Monitors and Tegus

Crocodilians, Monitors and Tegus are intermediate to expert lizards that can be maintained by a beginner with lots of care and patience for these lizards. These types of lizards are known for their large sizes and aggressiveness but make great pets for anyone who is able to care for them. These are the largest lizards and require larger enclosures than the other lizards on this web site. They also may have enormous appetites and require large meals on a weekly base.

These animals require temperature ranges of 80-95 degrees. They also need to have a basking spot or heat rock and have special lighting requirements. These lizards should be purchased with lot’s of thought in their care and the space they will need. These lizards are wonderful to have for exhibition, and to handle. With time and patience you may be able to tame your Monitor, Tegu, or crocodilian but you should remember that they can still be very aggressive.

Tegus

Tegus are the best beginner to intermediate lizard out of this category. They generally aren’t as aggressive, but this depends on the individual lizard. They can grow fairly large and can be expensive to feed, and require large enclosures. Tegus can have very exotic colors, and patterns which make them a wonderful lizard for any collection.

There are many types of monitors from Dwarf monitors which grow to around 3 ft, to water monitors which requires lots of water in their enclosure. Tree monitors who do a lot of climbing, and savannah monitors which prefer a simulated desert. Monitors are the smartest of the many different types of lizard they are very intelligent and need to be highly respected. Crocodilians

Crocodilians are the largest reptiles with legs. They should only be purchased by an intermediate to expert lizard handler. Actually Crocodilians fall under their own category from lizards, but I have put them here for your ease. Crocodilians come in may different sizes from caimans to alligators and crocodiles. Crocodilians require large enclosures and a basking spot to digest their food. Their upkeep can be very expensive, and they require lot’s of attention. I would recommend one of these lizards for exhibition purposes only and I wouldn’t recommend handling.
